Events for March 2011

Prague Travel Writer ‐ Krystina Svobodova

It’s March and spring is fighting its way back to town. Prague is getting ready for the busy season but it’s not quite there yet ‐ which means no crowds! There’s plenty of ways to celebrate, so pick yours and have fun.

St. Matthew's Fair ‐ March 5 to April 25, 2011

St. Matthew is patron of builders, butchers, blacksmiths and tailors. There are a number of traditions connected with him, but the one that dates back to the 16th century and is still popular these days is St. Matthew's Fair, held at the Prague Exhibition Grounds in Vystaviste throughout April every year. This year, there will be about 120 rides and attractions, including long standing favourites like bumping cars and the Loch Ness carousel. You can also expect some adrenaline raising newbies like the Catapult Bungee. The fair is open Tuesday to Friday from 14.00 to 21.00 and on weekends between 10.00 and 22.00.

White Lies ‐ March 7, 2011

These alternative rockers from London have been compared to the likes of Joy Division, Interpol and Editors, and they’re going to make an appearance in Prague's Lucerna Music Bar on the tour promoting their second album. Their music has been described as: “dark yet uplifting,” so let's see what that sounds like live. The support act is very promising too ‐ Crocodiles are a new Indie pop sensation from California and they’ve been getting great reviews for their sophomore album Sleep Forever. Tickets are 495 CZK and are available through Ticketpro offices.

Goldie ‐ March 11, 2011

The godfather of Drum 'n' Bass and former cast member of the soap opera EastEnders is coming to Prague and he’s even bringing a few special guests with him! Goldie's first DJ show in Prague will take place in the Matrix music club and you can get your ticket for 360 CZK through Ticketpro.

One World Film Festival ‐ March 8 to 17, 2011

One World or ‐ Jeden svet ‐ is the largest human rights documentary festival in Europe. This year is already its 13th and will present 104 documentaries from almost 30 countries. The aim is to promote high‐quality documentary filmmaking around themes that are socially aware, politically engaged and promote human rights. As in past years, the Lucerna cinema near Wenceslas Square will be the festival center, with other cinemas including old‐school favourites Svetozor, Evald and Archa, also playing host. Tickets for each screening are 80 CZK.

Febiofest ‐ March 24 to April 1, 2011

Febiofest is another movie festival worth the mention. It was founded 18 years ago by FEBIO, an independent film and TV company. During the long transition from communism to democracy, FEBIO provided a working opportunity to many important Czech filmmakers including Vera Chytilova, Juraj Jakubisko, Jiri Menzel and others.

Starting as a no‐budget event for friends, Febiofest has grown over the years into one of the largest film festivals in the Czech Republic. Situated in the modern 12‐screen multiplex, Cinestar Andel, it guarantees excellent screening conditions for all formats.

Later in the night, Febiofest transforms itself into a music festival, showcasing world music, jazz, blues, avant‐garde and alternative rock concerts in the multiplex cinema garages. They also have off site projections, which this year will take place at the Prague Airport. Tickets go on sale on March 16 in the Cinestar Andel box offices.

600 Years of the Prague Astronomical Clock ‐ Until March 29, 2011

The Old Town Astronomical Clock is one of the most popular and beautiful sights in Prague and it's celebrating the unbelievable anniversary of 600 years. Until March 29, there is an exclusive exhibition titled the Clockmaker’s Art, held in the Cloister and the Knight’s Hall of the Old Town City Hall. Independent Czech watch manufacturers will be joined in the exhibit by diamond vendors and leading Czech fashion designer, Beata Rajska. Tickets starts at 190 CZK.
