Story Highlights
The AghaRTA Jazz Festival ‐ March 8, 2010
AghaRTA Jazz Centrum is a beloved jazz spot in Prague and the AghaRTA Jazz Festival is this joint’s most popular event. Since 1992 the festival has become something of a tradition and over the many fruitful years it’s attracted the likes of Diana Krall, Eric Truffaz, John Scofield and Mike Stern. The spring instalment of the festival kicks off in February and will run until May. The big concert for March will be the Ta Dah! ‐ Oz Noy Trio, featuring Dave Weckl and James Genus. Oz Noy is an Israeli guitarist living in the USA. He’s also one of the most original musicians on the NY jazz scene at the moment, so be there!
One World ‐ March 10 to 18, 2010
One World also known as Jeden svet, is the largest human rights documentary festival in Europe. This is the festival’s twelfth year and in 2010 more than 100 documentaries from 30 countries will be screened. The aim is to promote high‐quality documentary filmmaking, based on social, political and engaging tales of human rights. You can also look forward to daily panel discussions with the directors and protagonists from select documentaries. Check out oneworld.cz for all the info ‐ there’s plenty!
30 Seconds to Mars with Special Guests ‐ March 18, 2010
The ever‐so‐nice Jared Leto is a part of this band and that’s all you need to know right? Well ok, 30 Seconds to Mars are an Indie Rock band from Los Angeles and they sound like an EMO ‐ Kings of Leon hybrid! In other words they're cool and a great act to see live. They’re also bringing along some ‘special guests’ which is a tad exciting! These guys are set to play the Incheba Arena and tickets are 645 CZK ‐ available through Ticketpro offices.
FEBIOFEST ‐ March 25 to April 4, 2010
Just one more film festival ‐ I promise! This time it’s a little more mainstream than One for All and All for One and it’s been around for longer too. FEBIOFEST actually began 17 years ago as a small project organised by people with no money and a desire to make audiences happy. Over the years FEBIOFEST became a mainstream phenomenon ‐ but the objective remained the same. It still features movies of all genres, formats and lengths ‐ showcasing only the very best releases from the previous twelve months. In recent years FEBIOFEST has hosted directors and actors such as Roman Polanski, Claudia Cardinal and Nikita Michalkov. You can enjoy this one in Village Cinemas Andel ‐ a 12 screen multiplex cinema in Prague.
Stomp ‐ March 15 to 21, 2010
When you think of Stomp the first thing that should come to mind is dance … or theatre … or choreography … or music … or comedy. Stomp in fact is all of these and more, or rather a movement of bodies and objects accompanied by sounds. There is no dialog and no script. It’s just a bunch of amazing dancers using stuff you’d find on the street to create a wonderful show. When they were in Prague back in 2008 more then 10,000 people saw the show and maybe this time around, you’ll be one of them! Catch the show at the Congress Center. Tickets are available through ticketpro.cz
The Easter Markets ‐ March 20 to April 11, 2010
Last but not least I present to you ‐ the Easter markets! Prague with markets is Prague at its best ‐ whether it’s Christmas or Easter! The main markets are always found in the Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square, in the very heart of Prague. The atmosphere here is guaranteed to take you back a century or two. The Easter markets will run daily and this year you can expect hundreds of stalls, all selling traditional, hand crafted products. Look out for some truly kitsch wooden toys, sparkling Czech crystal and puppets galore.
The best part (albeit not very healthy) is the food and drink on offer, and if you have a penchant for barbecued sausage, ice cold beer (pivo in Czech) or roast pig, then this is the place for you! You can even order off this menu for breakfast ‐ you are on holiday after all! Also for the ladies in the crowd ‐ here’s a word to the wise. If a man runs after you with a whip made out of braided osier twigs on Easter Monday, you must allow him to give you a little whipping! It’s an Easter tradition in the Czech Republic and it’s rumoured to chase away bad spirits, and illness. When in Prague …
