April is the right month to come to Prague. It’s been a long and cold winter but now all the snow has melted, the sun is shining and the birds are singing. The time for walks in the park, picnics and most importantly beer in the garden bars, is now! If beer isn’t your thing there’s still a lot to do ‐ see a gallery exhibition, dance the night away, enjoy a good concert or just relax and enjoy your time in the beautiful, blooming Prague. Entropa ‐ Until April 30, 2010
Entropa is a satirical piece of plastic that caused a lot of fuzz from the moment it was publicised. It was made by controversial Czech artist David Cerny and the original purpose was to decorate the building that is seat of The Council of European Union, during the Czech presidency of EU. Its fame however has crossed the border and spread all the way to Brussels because David Cerny decided to represent stereotypes from every EU country in this huge, 16.5 metre tall, piece of plastic. That’s why Cyprus is cut in two halfs, Italy is one big football field, Denmark is made of Lego and Belgium is a half eaten box of pralines. If you‘re curious what the other countries look like, you’ll have to go and see it for yourself!
Entropa will be in the Dox Centre of Contemporary Art until April 30, 2010. Entrance is 180 CZK for adults and 90 CZK for students. While you’re there make sure to check out the other exhibits as well! For example starting on April 16, there will be a collection of works by Jan Kaplicky ‐ the prominent Czech architect who recently passed away. Jan was best known for the Media Centre at the Lord’s Cricket ground in London and the Selfridges & Co department store in Birmingham. Dox also has a great book and design shop that you shouldn’t miss!
Nada Surf ‐ April 25, 2010
Want to feel like it’s 1996 again or simply want to enjoy some great rock music? Then come and party with the band Nada Surf at one of Prague’s very favourite venues ‐ the Lucerna Music Bar. This American group has been around since the early nineties and they’re still rocking! Tickets are 330 CZK and are available through Ticketpro offices. The concert is on Sunday but if you happen to be in Prague a couple days earlier, you should make your way to Lucerna on Friday or Saturday (or both) for the famous 80s and 90s video party! You can even go ahead and vote for your favourite songs on the club website. The chances are that you’ll hear them later on so go on and join in with the night fever.
Dancer of the Year My City My Stage ‐ April 14 and 15, 2010
Come to the hip club SaSaZu on April 14 and 15 if you want to see a celebration of street dance accompanied by music and lights, and also to find out who the dancer of the year will be! Or if you think you can dance, register on their website and try to impress the crowd with your moves. We already know the names of three finalists and seven more will be picked by the international judges in the semifinals on April 14! The winner gets to go to a dance workshop in New York and there are many other prizes worth 200.000 CZK! Tickets are 150 CZK for the semifinals, 290 CZK for the finals and 390 CZK for both nights. STIMUL Festival ‐ April 30, 2010
STIMUL is a relatively new festival with a clear purpose ‐ to showcase music that isn’t otherwise available to the public. The organisers try to show the best of Electronica, contemporary Jazz and many other kinds of music. The performers are both icons of given genres as well as relatively unknown artists with big potential. Over the past five years it brought us the likes of Peaches, Mogwai and Animal Collective and this year music lovers in Prague will be more then happy with the line up at the Archa Theatre! The concert on April 30, 2010 features Nurse with Wound ‐ an experimental electronic project from the UK. Tickets are 490 CZK and are available through Ticketpro.
